Each day we drive our cars on the road or take a walk on the footpaths, do we really appreciate how convenient life is for us. Most of us won’t give a second thought to the guys like Joe Doone & his team on the back straining work that they get up to every day just so we have smooth roads. Throughout the day I grew a stronger sense of appreciation for these guys seeing the process, exactly what takes place to lay tarmac from a big team of men, equipment and a team that works in harmony when that tar is ready to be released. It was a choreographed military operation. We couldn’t believe how many different different vehicles and tools are involved and just how hard they work.

Meet Joe Doone. He is the son of a great tarmacer - Joe Senior. Young Joe started out as a sub contractor and began his career with McQuillan’s Contracts. Working on some of the largest laying contracts throughout Ireland and some of leading bespoke contracts including Titanic Belfast Museum.
Joe has been fortunate to work with one of the leading surfacing companies in Europe, Lagans, with their white Mountain company.
In 2020 J Doone Surfacing was formed specialising in resurfacing from homes, driveways, industrial sites and larger contracts. The business has gone from strength to strength with the team growing and the contracts flowing.
There was something very emotional watching the men laying the roads. I really took time to appreciate all those that have gone before us that had to create machinery, learn how to go down under the ocean to drill for the constituent parts. We rarely stop fo appreciate everything around us. I loved this quote from the poem

Beneath the sun, where dreams align

A harmonious chorus of tires and tar,
Uniting destination, no matter how far.
As the team, materials and equipment started arriving the guys got ready for the big project ahead with a plan of action then immediately got straight to work.
Halfway done and you can already see the incredible difference.

We find it really interesting to shoot commercial photography and video. You get to learn so much about other industries. Although these photographs were taken to be used on their website and social media, I personally think it was a great documentary of process and captured our current techniques. I would image with how artificial intelligence is progressing and robots, this may not be how roads are laid in 50 years time. These photographs could be a wonderful documentary of the process.
